A Photo Collage for your Memory Book

The genealogy researcher "Italian Genealogist" has restored many of his old photos with us. The last one was of his great grandfather.  He asked us if we could make a frame or anything else to improve the photo even more.

We had made an earlier photo restoration of his great grandmother with his mother, and uncle. (By the way, it is the same picture that we have used, with his permission, in one of our banners.) We suggested using both photos to make a Photo Collage. He thought it was a good idea, and agreed.

We made the Collage in a classic style, but naturally we have different backgrounds to choose from. On request we also added an informative text. You can see the result here:

Our Italian Genealogist was very pleased with the result - and added the collage to his memory book.

A Request from a Genealogist

An Italian Genealogist asked us to restore this photo of his ancestor. The man was his great grandfather and the photo was taken around 1917 during the World War I. The photo was unfortunately in a very bad condition.

First of all we desaturated the image to obtain an uniform color. We removed all dust, and marks on it. We repaired the cracks, and creases, and we tried to remove all spots. We also reconstructed the torned edge.

Then we “polished” all his beautiful buttons, and the spur on his boots.

At last we added a nice sepia-toning.

When we restore an old photo we never do any changes on it, because you should always be able to recognize the original image. We just clean and repair it, and enhance the significant and beautiful parts in it.

Spots and Sepia Toning

Armadukk wrote just to tell us that she has started with her genealogy research. She wanted us to restore the following photo for her.

This photo was taken in the middle of 1920, and it had a dark brown spot in the right corner. The photo was also a little faded. Not a very big problem, but enough to ruin the photo.

We removed the large spot, increased the brightness, and after that we added a Sepia Toning. That was all we needed to do to change the image to the better.

Small changes can do a lot.

Armadukk, Good Luck with your research. We are sure that it will give you a lot of satisfaction!

Genealogy Photos

This old photo from 1910 belongs to AlexR, and is part of a genealogic research that he is working on. The man portrayed in the photo is AlexR's great grandfather.

AlexR asked us if we could repair the picture for him. He was not very precise in his request because he didn't know exactly what could be done to the image. He wanted only to improve it. So he wrote "I leave it to you to decide what to do."  And sometimes that's enough for us.

The image had a very poor quality, it was faded and had markings on it. The background was also very ugly.

We started with a "clean-up" of the background. Thereafter the color was changed, and on top we added some filters. That's for the background.

Then we proceeded with the marks in the face, and the strong light on the mans forehead. To get an even color all over the image, we desaturated it; then we added a Sepia toning. Afterwards we improved the brightness, the hue, and the saturation.

Since AlexR didn't give us any instructions about how he wanted the final result, we made two versions so he could choose the one he liked best.

AlexR has also been so kind to allow us to republish the "remake" that we had done with his great grandfather.

How to Prepare for a Panoramic Composition

It is not so difficult to take photos to create a Panorama picture. You only have to follow a few simple rules

To create a Panorama image you need to take a series of photos from just about, (but not necessarily exactly), the same viewpoint.

A tripod in this case is a great tool to use, bur even without it you can take good photos for your panorama composition.

Just keep in mind to keep the camera very steady and try to hold it on the same level for every photo. Move the camera right-handed and make sure there is an overlap between the pictures. This overlap will be used to stitch the images together, so try to repeat distinctive features, such as a lamp post, a tree or other shapes in the margins of the photos

Name the picture with the same filename and add a number after the filename in their clockwise order, otherwise we could not compose the Panorama Composition in the right order.

The following Panorama Composition was made out of five different photos.

Example of Background Distraction Removal

If you went through the tutorial What Happens with My Submission? you might have noticed that we used a picture there to illustrate the submission workflow.

That picture is a case of a picture  with a background distraction.

Here you can see the picture in more detail, and the work that we did. We removed the head in the right, lower corner and the black spot to the left of the young man's shoulder. We also improved the colors a little and took away some small spots from his face.

Frames

Here we want to present a technique of great effect: how you can change an image's aspect by adding a frame to it. By adding a frame, the photo will appear more important, and its colors will appear more vivid. The frame gives depth to the photo, and it makes it more complete.

It is important to pick a frame that fits the photo well, so as to give it that special touch. When we choose a frame we will consider the color tone as well as the subject, and the overall theme of the image.

The choice of work depends on the photo. There are many solutions and there are hundreds of different types of frames to choose from to add that little extra pizzazz to your ordinary photos. Take a look at the following samples (click on the thumbnails to see larger pictures):

A few examples of different frames

We can also transform your photo into a Vignette Picture - that is a process that will preserve the clarity at the center of the photo, and fades off towards the edges. You can use any picture you like. It is very popular.

Some vignette

Every vignette and frame is individual and unique, and very often we create a vignette and then combine it with a frame. Creating a vignette and then adding a frame to the result creates a stunning effect! The two go together very well.

 Vignette with frame

Well, isn't this something for your photos? Sign up now, and submit your pictures, and you can be sure that the vignette or frame we compose for you will fit your photo perfectly!
