Help with old photos
Hi Photo Remake
I have registered with your site which I find very interesting.
I have looked at the photo that belongs to AlexR and I am impressed with the work that you have done.
Since I have some old photos of my own and I keep them, as you say “in a shoe-box”, I was inspired to preserve them and to create my family story with scrapbooks.
The problem is that I am a newbie to genealogy, and to handling photos as well. I do not know were to start. What techniques are best for restoring the photos. How shall I keep them, etc.
Perhaps you could give me some tips on how to proceed.
Regards
Armadukk
Hi there Armadukk
Glad you visit our site, and we wish you welcome.
We are also very glad that you asked us about how to restore, keep and handle old photos as this is a matter that we care for very much.
Preserving our photographs is like preserving our history. You can consider yourself very fortunate if you have photos from your ancestors. The family photos should really be kept for the next generation to enjoy.
The old photos deteriorates for many reasons, such as heat, cold, humidity, and many other things. Years ago the techniques and chemicals, used to develop the photos, were very different from those used today. So the deterioration can also depend on that.
Different techniques can be used to restore a photo. It can be done chemically or electronically.
If you choose the chemical treatment you should be aware of that this can harm the photo.
Our advise is: do not treat an original photo with chemicals. If you choose this treatment never let an amateur do the job because it is a very delicate work to do. The photo can be destroyed for ever. Only Photographic Conservators should be allowed to work on an original photo.
Do not take chances with your photos, convert them into digital images. Doing that, the original photo will not be touched, so it is always there. Furthermore you have a copy of it, an you can make as many copy you like, to give to your children, grandchildren, and relatives.
Once you have your photos in digital format, it is possible to restore them electronically with todays technology. You can even send them to us, and we can process them for you, restoring them to their original state and enhancing them if necessary.
